SHAMS-E-TABRIZI MONUMENT & CULTURAL CENTER COMPETITION
1st Place
Tabriz – IRAN
Spring 2009
.
The project of Shams-e-Tabrizi monument and cultural center is designed in Golestan garden in Tabriz city. This complex is related to Iranian Sufi and poet of 7th century A.H. There was no exact information about Shams-e- Tabrizi personal life before discovery of his articles. Although in his book of articles he has mentioned nothing about his biography and background but we can recognize him among descriptions and memories, descriptions that he has discussed about people and sayings in various occasions.
The site of the project is located in Golestan garden which is one of the old and famous gardens in Tabriz and this garden is built over 100 years ago and is the oldest public promenade and was the national garden of the city. It has the attention of people since the old days and because of its proximity to Tabriz Bazaar and historical part of the city, people usually rest in this garden after their shopping. It seems that because of the adjacent to historical fabric and main core of old Tabriz from one hand, and also the subject of the project which is designing a monument for the great Sufi and poet from the other hand, needs a different solution. Thus, the most important strategy in designing of this complex was to create a conceptual and also a physical connection with the old fabric of Tabriz, which created a very proper relation with the city in addition to enriching the atmosphere of the project’s space.
The city of Tabriz has been destroyed and rebuilt for many times during the history. Its background goes back to Parthians (Arsacides) and Sassanid period. It has also been famous at the beginning of the Islamic period. During past decades, this city has encountered several incidents such as occupation by foreigners and fatal earthquakes. The culminating prosperity of Tabriz was at Ilkhani period, it was the time that Tabriz was the capital of a territory that was expanded from Nile to middle Asia. Tabriz has also been Iran’s capital during Timurids period, Agh Ghouyounloo and Ghara Ghouyounloo and early years of the safavid dynasty. Many European tourists went through Tabriz during 17th, 18th and 19th century. In 17th century, Chardean has written that” I have found no city in this world that new writers had discussed this much about its construction, creation and its early name.”
